This well-illustrated biography is the illuminating and delightful memoir of an American girl, Marjorie El-Kadi, who went to Baghdad when it was an entirely different place. Married to a prominent Iraqi diplomat, she also lived in Turkey, Lebanon, Belgium and New York, where her husband at the U.N. was Consul General from Iraq. She experienced Iraq move in its downward spiral from a monarchy through a series of ever more repressive dictatorships. We follow her career as a mother, teacher, actress and the hostess of a cable television series. Please check out Marjorie’s video biography for free. Baghdad Before and Beyond eBook Marjorie ElKadi
Historians say you don't know where you are going unless you know where you came from. The title of my mother's book captures it's essence.I read the book in one sitting as I could not put it down. As exciting as a Clavell adventure novel, yet it is real. The reader is invited into a world of upper class Arab society and a whirlwind of diplomatic parties, to the bedrooms of the flourishing arts communities in New York.
The strength and resilience with witch my mother delt with adversity makes her
my hero.

Baghdad Before and Beyond eBook Marjorie ElKadi Reviews
Like others, I read "Baghdad Before and Beyond" in one sitting. (It is difficult to put it down!) It is very interesting to learn about Iraqi "high society" before the country was dragged down by Saddam Hussein and then torn apart by decades of war.
Brilliantly written depiction of an extraordinary life. For anyone who has an interest in History, Middle East politics and courageous life choices, this is a must read! Baghdad in the fifties and early sixties is brought to life with fascinating and eloquent detail. An unabashed, exciting and remarkable story, the author writes of the constraints of her time, and the misogony of arab society, with poignancy and often humorous storytelling. Difficult to put down!
When I first met fellow student Marjorie Ehle at American University in the 1940s, I recognized her as a very interesting person. Fortunately for me we kept in contact for over 60 years. Her "Baghdad - Before and Beyond" is a frank and fascinating autobiography - an account of her childhood (we should all be so precocious!) from skipping class to do radio, to dj, to Off-Broadway, to American University scholarship, debating club, marriage to an Iraqi, and beyond. She did everything with guts and (sometimes) very good luck. She gives us wonderful insights into the culture and history of pre-Bush Iraq (not to mention Washington DC, Arlington Virginia,, NYC, Harlem, Staten Island ["From our vantage point ... we saw the twin towers burning"], Florida, etc). And much, much more. It was a captivating read (I couldn't stop until the end), filled in a few spots I was unfamiliar with, and I thoroughly enjoyed every word. You will too.

Interesting content but written with annoying lack of detail......almost as if it was too much trouble to add descriptions. The book could have been so much more interesting than it is.
